The ‘Ginger Spice’ of Girlfriend tried her own individual poetry.
The girl group Girlfriend had dominated 1991 to 1994 with hits coming out left, right and centre. However, the five piece fell apart after Robyn Loau up and left the group, which renamed itself to GF4 – which eventually dissolved in due time.
After stepping away from the limelight, Loau popped up in 1997 with her solo effort Sick With Love.
The slick usage of violin with the emotion of a passionate indie rock feel gives Sick With Love the raw feel of someone scourned, as demonstrated in the lyrics. It is a far cry from the manufactured pop tracks Loau churned out through the bubblegum pop factory that Girlfriend was created on, and shows that Loau has remarkable talent and seemed restricted and unable to let her true self out there. Sick With Love proves it.
The track peaked at Number 21 on the ARIA Charts, and created a cult fan base on radio station Triple J. The album Malaria was meant to be released in 1998, but failed to appear due to her record company PolyGram being merged with Universal Music, thus her being dropped. Fast forward to 2008 and Malaria sees a new lease in life.
