Skyhooks – Horror Movie (1974)

Melbourne glam rock band Skyhooks achieve their first Number One hit.

The five piece band consisting of Graham “Shirley” Strachan, Red Symons, Bob Starkie, Greg Macainsh, and Imants “Freddie” Strauks released Horror Movie in 1974 from their debut album, Living In the 70s.

The spookily themed track, based on events in modern society and how watching the evening news (‘It’s the 6:30 News’) is practically a horror movie, didn’t receive much traction to begin with.

It wasn’t until appearances and support from ABC’s Countdown in 1975, that gave Skyhooks a larger platform to promote their music, in which Horror Movie ended up reaching Number 1 on the Australian Music Charts for 2 weeks.

An added bonus was being part of the first appearance of Countdown in glorious colour, introduced by Johnny Farnham.
