Kim Churchill

Kim Churchill

You may have seen this musical genius on his travels, busking and performing around the Great Southern Land.

The talent that is Kim Churchill started his musical journey in 2009 while by busking and traveling around Australia, entertaining strangers and fans with his musical stylings on his guitar, even performing at Bluesfest Byron Bay since 2010. The passion for the art shows in his writings, drawing inspiration from being constantly on the road, locally and overseas.

His second album Detail of Distance, was recorded in Vancouver, Canada and is presently headlining a 26-date national tour there. Churchill will be returning home to star in his own national summer tour, with some special guests in tow at various shows(Steve Smyth, Kate Miller-Heidke, Half Moon Run) performing his own blended works of blues, country and folk tunes to delight the ear buds of anyone who is kind enough to stop the world turning for a minute to listen.

When did you decide “Yes, I’m going to make music my living”?

Never really. For as long as I can remember I just figured it was what I  was going to do.

Did you have nerves when you began busking?

Yeah. I reckon you face more rejection in an hour or two thank many face in there entire lives. Its a little nerve racking.

Do you have a certain process when writing? What are your inspirations?

The ever changing and morphing world around me. Being on the rtoad is my biggest inspiration. The Process is always different. Lately I have been enjoying playing songs before I write them. For example, hitting record and just playing the first melody and words that come to my head. If it works well you listen back to the recording and have the best part of a song. It feels like more of a ‘channelling’ thing and saves a lot of time…

Your album “Detail of Distance” was recorded in Vancouver. How long were you there for and what pros / cons did you experience?

It took about 3 weeks. Lots of good Pho in Vancouver and the lack of nice weather and surf made it easy to focus. Though at the same time I hate being away from the ocean, I find its easy to get dragged down.

What was it like to travel around Australia? Did you discover any areas/locations which blew your mind?

Of course. Most days. I have especially loved exploring Western Australia.

How was it playing at Bluesfest? Did you meet any big names that had you flabbergasted?

John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.. Best moment of my life without a doubt.

Favourite place to perform in Australia? Where would you love to play that you haven’t performed before?

The Junkyard in Maitland is my favourite place to play. I have always dreamed of playing the Palais (is that the right spelling?) Theatre in Melbourne.

Name three musicians/artists/bands from any era (dead or alive) who you would love to play with on stage, performing one special song.

Neil Young, Nick Drake and Jimmy Page.
