How to be a YouTube star

A quick way to earn some coin is to throw up a couple of homemade videos onto YouTube. Once they become popular within a certain period of time, YouTube give you an option to join their ad revenue club where they give you a percentage of earnings from promoting advertisements on or near your popular video. pretty cool when you think about it. But before that happens, you have to make sure that your videos meet their terms and conditions, which are displayed when they send you the invite. If all goes well – you can start raking it in.

But, what can you do to get the hits up?

You can’t take anyone else’s footage or copyrighted material and throw it up on the site. The terms and conditions prevent you from making money from it. So make something from scratch. Here are 3 popular and common Youtubers doing something good, or something time wasting – depending on your view of things.

Hot For Words

Meet Marina Orlova. Russian philologist who loves her English language. But how do you make linguistics entertaining and eye-catching? The terms “Sex sells” and “If you’ve got it – flaunt it” are put into good usage here. Orlova uses her beauty and visible cleavage to make her target audience sit up and pay attention. With very cheeky dialogue, visual humour and words and phrases that can refer to something adult, Orlova thoroughly explains in her English (with Russian accent) on the history of the topics, and encourages viewers to put in their ‘homework’ in the comments section.

What began as a parody of another Youtube video on ‘How to fake a 6 pack‘, Sydney-sider Natalie Tran unintentionally hit the big time with her funny takes on everyday life. Similar to topics on what you may get if you bred Seinfeld and Carl Barron together. Observational humour.

Covering random topics on how do you push the pedestrian button at the traffic lights, hackers in movies managing to instantly hack in without Windows or Linux, picking up on silly catchphrases, the list goes on… and you relate to it. She plays most of the characters in her videos, split screen style, most of it filmed around her parents place. Due to her overwhelming popularity, Travel company Lonely Planet sent her overseas to vlog the places she goes to, using her genuine wit and personality to talk about her holidays. It made me organise my next trip overseas.

You’re a kid with confidence, looking odd-ball, and may have some dance moves up your sleeve. So you turn your webcam on and start filming yourself in your bedroom to the latest pop music. That’s what Keenan Cahill has done. Suffering from Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome hasn’t stopped this school kid attempting to mime his way through Katy Perry, Kesha, and eventually buddying up with Rapper 50 Cent to just mime his way through songs, dancing and doing swift moves. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame kid – say hello to Mr Chocolate Rain for me.

So, get your webcam out and get creating! You never know, you could be stuck between these two in the future at Pop Culture conventions, or selling t-shirts with your own quotes.
