As a diehard How I Met Your Mother fan reacted with the typical offended disgust someone gets when they realise, they are old enough to have one of their favourite shows get the reboot treatment. With that initial fear and frustration that comes along with the idea that someone thinks they can re-capture the chemistry and surprise of the first series is almost laughable, like “Ok buddy, good luck with that….”
I have probably watched HIMYM a dozen times straight through, with a least five of those times being viewed episode after episode on a streaming service. I’ve noticed all the fun little things that carry on throughout the series, and special episodes like the countdown episode in Season 6, Episode 13. [If you’ve not noticed that episode just google How I Met Your Mother countdown episode, there are plenty of compilations out there.]
To say I was annoyed when it was revealed they would make a reboot titled How I Met Your Father would be an understatement. Today however, I did stumble upon the newly release trailer and am a slightly more hopeful…
The new series features a more diverse cast and will focus on how Sophie (Kim Cattrall / Hilary Duff) met her husband, someone’s father… Have a quick view of the trailer above… I’ll wait….
Ok so, from the trailer I can see they’re sticking with the same style of show, set in and out of a bar, out on the town, etc, i.e.; the female centric experiences of looking for “the one.” While I loved all of HIMYM, I do hope they stray from the cookie cutter reproduction however. For example, I hope this series does something different in regards to the ending, like I hope they do not kill off the father only to reveal she’s now married to her best friend, whom we’ve just met in this trailer. Other than what appears to be overacting which could be toned down as everyone gets comfortable with their role, I’d say this looks ok.
This reboot will premiere in the US on Hulu on January 18, 2022 and Star on Disney Plus internationally shortly after, so keep an eye out!
I hope to follow this show and see how it develops, with more reviews to come!
Do you have any movies or shows you’ve been blindsided by the announcement of a reboot?
