Re-live the chemistry between Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton in 1998.
Have you seen the following films from 1998?
- Sphere
- Boogie Nights
- Jackie Brown
- As Good As It Gets
- Lost In Space
- Home Alone 3
- Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
- and the rest…?
If not, don’t turn to a movie review site like Rotten Tomatoes or some dodgy Wikipedia entry. Instead, before you crack open that VHS case / DVD / SVOD stream, turn to a reliable review from credible hosts Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton, with The Movie Show.
From 1986 to 2004, the highly praised critics would spend 30 minutes on our cathode ray tubes in the frequency of SBS, telling us what film was cool, what film was destined to be heading to the $2 bargain bin, and a competitive star-rating that ignited sparkling repartee and verbal fisti-cuffs.
Pomeranz and Stratton eventually moved to the ABC in 2004 for the review show At The Movies to continue their reviews, until their retirement in 2014, and permanently cemented themselves in cult history. Their ABC editions were released in podcast form during its run, but the episode history on SBS simply laid dormant in storage… until now.
In an amazing feat in pop culture achievement, SBS Viceland have started to screen episodes from 1998 – 20 years since their original broadcast. Currently shown at the ‘weekend-viewers’ time slot of around 1:30am Sunday mornings as double episodes. For those who are up watching Rage on their sister government run station, or do not have DVRs at the ready, the episodes are made available after broadcast on SBS On Demand. You can start viewing their reviews on ‘upcoming features’, and be amused when Stratton praises Starship Troopers, by watching the first episode here – with viewing other episodes as they are uploaded.
Be quick though, this 1998 archive will only be up until late July / early August, 2018!
Five stars.
