One night, five friends, 12 bars – a night you are sure to..err…remember? Or Feel! I mean, you know assuming you only have one drink per bar you are still at 12 drinks which may or may not result in slight memory loss to say the least… Anyhow, how about The World’s End, right? After much anticipation I am thrilled to say it is totally worth a viewing!
This fun, witty, little film by Edgar Wright is filled with fantastic one-liners, hilarious fight scenes and a really great soundtrack. It reunites “for the last time (WTF),” the hilarious duo, Simon Pegg (Gary King), and Nick Frost (Andy Knightly) as they find themselves once again having to save their own asses from a city taken over by people who are out of their minds. Per usual I highly recommend watching the first two films Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz in the series affectionately known as the The Cornetto Trilogy, as there are so many fun little references and themes that are carried through all three movies. Lots of fun here!
The movie starts with a high energy introduction of each youthful high school version of the five main characters: Gary King, Oliver Chamberlain (Martin Freeman), Steven Prince (Paddy Considine), Peter Sage (Eddie Marsan), Andy Knightly, and continues to explain the legendary night of their young lives – the epic pub crawl – conquering the Golden Mile – one night, five friends, and 12 bars – ending with the bar of all bars – The World’s End.

Fast forward to 2013 – Gary who is umm, slightly stuck in the 90′s finds himself at a crossroads of sorts, and decides the best thing to do is to relive the night he considers to be the night of his life! So he rounds up the boys and they head back home. After little delays here and there the five guys finally make it to the first bar. At this point things seem a bit off but nothing too unusual considering it has been 20 years since their last visit. After ordering their drinks they sit and take in the memories surrounding them… shortly after things start to get interesting!!
If I am going to be completely honest getting to this point was a little slow, but there is a fantastic soundtrack that will captive you during the slightly slow points, and if you were smart enough to see Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz you will pick up on a few the recurring themes and comical tie-ins, all of which will keep you laughing.
Finally to the guts of it all- the “Robots.” These characters are fun, a really cool idea and successfully executed. The blue… “Blood” …or “ink?” was a great touch, it really differentiated a “Robot” from say… a Zombie or not human. The fight sequences are a hoot, and full of little surprises as they continue on. Overall this movie is really fun and entertaining, and I totally recommend seeing it at the theater!
