Late October 2024 saw my mate Kris and me trading our Aussie springtime for a slice of the American West. At just over 40, we decided it was high time for an adventure—a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, then looping back to L.A. through some of the most iconic and surreal landscapes the U.S. has to offer.
Our route wasn’t your average point-A-to-point-B drive. Instead, we opted for the ultimate nerd pilgrimage: weaving through Area 51, the stark beauty of Death Valley, and the majestic expanse of Yosemite National Park. For two self-proclaimed geeks, this was the perfect mix of nature, sci-fi intrigue, and jaw-dropping scenery.
Into the Desert: Area 51 and Death Valley
No geeky road trip is complete without a detour to Area 51. While we didn’t exactly storm the gates (we like our freedom, thank you very much), cruising along the Extraterrestrial Highway felt otherworldly enough. Conspiracy theories buzzing in our heads, we moved on to Death Valley, a place so surreal it felt like stepping onto a Martian landscape. The dry heat and vast, open spaces made us both appreciate the rugged beauty of the Earth—and the invention of air conditioning.
Nature’s Grandeur: Yosemite National Park
After the desolate allure of Death Valley, Yosemite was like stepping into a painting. Towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and crisp mountain air provided a much-needed contrast to the arid desert. We hiked (okay, strolled) through trails, pausing frequently to take in the views and snap pictures that didn’t do justice to the sheer scale of the place. It was humbling, to say the least.
For two geeky brains, it was a reminder that life isn’t all screens and cityscapes. Sometimes, the best way to recharge is to hit the road, soak in the views, and embrace the adventure waiting just beyond the horizon.
