National Lampoon’s Morphing Children (part 1)

European Vacation

This just in – you can blame the 1985 film Weird Science featuring, Anthony Michael Hall for the birth of two new Griswold children in National Lampoon’s: European Vacation, the second film in the National Lampoon’s “Vacation” series.

According to a recent interview with Dana Barron, it was Hall’s fault the roles of Rusty and Audrey Griswold were recast for European Vacation. When Director Amy Heckerling and Producer Matty Simmons learned that Hall was off shooting Weird Science they decided a casting change was in order, prompting them to ultimately decide to recast both Griswold children leaving poor Dana by her phone until 18 hours ago.

This begs the question why recast both characters and not just Rusty? Well, according to Barron, she landed the role of Audrey because of her fantastic arguing skills… who knows maybe she was a crazy teenage diva.

Coming up in part  2 –  Was Weird Science worth it?  And why did they recast yet again for Christmas Vacation, did the curse of Rusty strike a second time?
