Inspect The Uninspected

UWSAASTWCATTT…

You know when you are on to a good thing when you star in a highly popular and cult-based comedy show, and you try and do your own thing and get praised for it.

Did that make sense?

Okay – this is another Community-related post.

While we briefly touched on the topic here of fan made videos, there was a scene based on a TV show within the show – Inspector Spacetime. This was a satire of the BBC classic Doctor Who. With a small in-joke with Community, the Inspector Spacetime gag has struck a bone with fans, praising a sketch which warms the cockles of any Sci-Fi heart.

Travis Richey, the gentleman who plays The Inspector in the show, has done one better for the fans (and himself) – make his own ‘spin-off’ show for real of Inspector Spacetime. Richey threw all the information on project supporter site Kickstarter a few months back, along with an animation to demonstrate on what he wanted to achieve. With enough funding, he would be able to make his own live action web series. Richey already pitched the idea to NBC / Sony / Whoever about making the series, but didn’t hear a response. So, Kickstarter was the plan.

Mid-way through the fundraising, Richey received a “cease and desist” notice as he was originally using the title Inspector Spacetime. Richey also had to explain that it was a non-profit series in which he was making for the fans. But that didn’t left him off the hook. So, after talking to legal eagles, the costume was altered, some other characters names were changed, and the title was scrapped to a tongue-in-cheek: Untitled Web Series About A Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time. You can read more on the legal issues here.

After word got around, the funding hit the target!

The final result:

Untitled Web Series About A Space Traveler Who Can Also Travel Through Time project has no association with NBC, Dan Harmon, Sony or Community whatsoever. Nor does Wireless Fodder or its owner. Same with the web host. Same with the ISP. Same with the PC used to type this up.
