Watch: Rafferty’s Rules (1987)

Here’s a classic show that’s slipped its way through the guards to streaming video on demand.

From 1987 to 1990, the Australian drama Rafferty’s Rules told the story of Michael Rafferty (John Wood) a separated father who practiced at a Magistrates’ court in the heart of Manly, NSW. Far from a plain and boring Magistrate, Rafferty often delivered his methods through a signature style of black humour, often while dealing with issues in his private life at the same time and with support of the Court Clerk Fulvio (Arky Michael).

Many prominent guests appeared in the series, such as Ernie Dingo, Andrew MacFarlane, Rebecca Rigg, Paul Chubb and Alwyn Kurts.

One of the earliest programs to be churned out of Channel 7’s in-house drama unit, the 86 episode series earned two Logie awards for Wood “Most Outstanding Actor” in 1988 and 1989, and Catherine Wilkin for “Most Outstanding Actress” in 1988.

Canberra Times The Guide – December 12, 1988.

While the series has not been officially released on DVD or digital, Channel 7 has released all 86 episodes available to consume right now on their 7Plus SVOD service. You may need to register, but it’s free.
