A revolutionary documentary TV series that saw the future.
Beyond 2000 was a TV series that started under the title Toward 2000 on the ABC back in 1981. Hosted by Doctors, Professors and many other renowned personalities in selected scientific, medicial and journalistic fields, stories included the future of engineering, living, technologies, and predictions on what how we evolve and adapt to the new and thriving technological world.
The successful 30 minute show was poached by Channel 7 in 1984 and was altered to a one hour commercial format and title change to Beyond 2000. Lasting until 1993, the show was a roaring success, and then again – picked up by rival commercial network Channel 10 where it last until 1995, where it was rested due to high production costs and ratings.
Other than a one off special in 1999, the show was picked up again by Channel 7 in 2005 and changed title to Beyond Tomorrow, broadcasting until 2007.
In 2016, Channel 7 are broadcasting a reboot titled Beyond 2020 – as technology has immensely evolved since their last show in 2007.
Here, Beyond Productions (Beyond.com.au) have released a handful of episodes of Beyond 2000 from the early 1980s and Beyond Tomorrow in 2005, on YouTube.
Watch these classic episodes and see what technologies survived, adapted, or simply didn’t eventuate. It’s mind-boggling.
There are other bootleg episodes on YouTube too, including this beautiful time capsule from 1995 based on ‘cyberspace’.
