Netflix goes #Community meta

Joel McHale needs to promote his new Netflix show.

So he does it in a meta way.

Greendale Human Beings unite!

Fans of the Dan Harmon created, six-season NBC (+ Yahoo Screen) sitcom Community (RIP 2009-2015) have long awaited for a movie, and we’re getting it!

No… that’s a damn stinkin’ lie.

However, the cult favourite show based around the lives of seven (plus more as the seasons got more silly) people from all walks of life, trying to survive their days at community college, starring Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Chevy Chase and Ken Jeong, had their time of day.  But each star continued their own careers once the show had wrapped.

Now, McHale, who’s wrap-up pop culture show The Soup was wrapped up by E! in the same year that Community was given its death sentence, is now popping up on Netflix with another pop culture show – The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale.

Executive Produced by Ghostbusters reboot extraordinaire Paul Feig, The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale will be a 13 episode weekly talk show, starting February 18, 2018. But how do you promote such a show?

That’s where McHale calls in some of his former Community cast mates who are already apart of some type of Netflix show on Netflix. Just like Alison Brie, who appears on Glow on Netflix (and who played Annie in Community), and Jim Rash, who is the host of Beyond Stranger Things on Netflix (who played school Dean Pelton in Community).

Throw in some rib-poking about Gillian Jacob’s show Love – also on Netflix, and a jab about a disgruntled former Community cast member, and you have yourself a very meta promo that’s streets ahead.

The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale  – starts February 18, on Netflix.
