Jan gets an iconic verbal whacking thanks to the Yellow Pages.
From Goggomobils to pink lady statue lamps and letting your fingers do the walking, the Yellow Pages commercials are iconic for their catchphrases and characters.
In 2000, Yellow Pages launched a commercial spot targeting businesses who may forget to advertise in the big yellow book and potentially losing business.
In this generic office, a businesswoman is searching for their ad spot in the phone book, and after discovering that the marketing manager Jan had not put their company in for printing, loses her cool – but not before meditating to process the thought. As Jan does the bolt out of the office, her boss expresses her frustration out through the office window, announcing “Not… happy… JAN!”
The phrase became so popular, it is now part of everyday Australian lingo. Amusingly, Actor Deborah Kennedy, who plays the unnamed businesswoman, has mentioned that people yell the quote to her and confuse her as “Jan”.
