Re-live the rebellious world of Nick, Con, Jodie and friends as they learn life lessons in high school.

Remember the days of high school where you would lug it out with a teacher, bump shoulders with your arch-rival but only to be friends with them later, or social media being non-existent?

In 1994, the stories of a growing teenage student was given a visual representation in the TV series Heartbreak High – a drama that set Generation X and Yers on fire.

A spin-off of the Australian 1993 film The Heartbreak Kid starring Alex Dimitriades as Nick Poulos, Heartbreak High‘s first season shone the light on Nick, his family, and his fellow friends / class-mates at Hartley High – a fictional school filled with multiculturalism and tension of sex, drugs, family struggles and politics.

Watch as:

  • Nick tries to manage a relationship with inspiring musician Jodie (Abi Tucker) while keeping his cousin, Con (Salvatore Coco) by his side, and dealing with his father, George (Nico Lathouris)
  • Southgate (Tony Martin) maintain his teaching authority while handling issues with his wife at home
  • Christina (Sarah Lambert) reigning in her students and curbing her love life
  • Rivers (Scott Major) keep up his ‘tough guy’ look, while trying to prove his innocence at the same time…

With a vast range of cast members, throughout its lifespan, Heartbreak High was a revolutionary drama which is a perfect screenshot of Australian suburban teen life the mid to late 1990s. Seasons 1 to 3 were broadcast on Channel Ten, while Seasons 4 to 7 were picked up by the ABC. The show eventually met its demise after struggles with selling later seasons to overseas markets.

Until December 2018, Channel Ten’s SVOD service TenPlay has all 38 episodes of Season 1 available to binge-watch for free, as part of their Summer Of Aussie Drama promotion:

Seasons 1 to 3 received DVD releases, however, Seasons 1 and 2 are now out of print. You can still purchase Season 3 through Umbrella Entertainment, or try your luck for Season 1 and 2 on eBay.

UPDATE: Season 2 has now been released on TenPlay.
