Hoges puts a shrimp on the barbie for America.
Possibly the most successful tourism campaign created to promote the land down under, Australia’s favourite larrikin Paul Hogan becomes the face of Australia to the rest of the world.
A series of commercials starring Hoges were screened internationally in 1984, before his feature film Crocodile Dundee was released in 1986.
With his ocker charm and smart looks, Hoges told America that he’ll ‘put a shrimp on the barbie’ for them, which became a major catchphrase for the campaign and cemented itself as an Australian cliche. Exhibit A: 1994 U.S. film Dumb and Dumber starring Jim Carrey.
